Yoga Therapy

What is the difference? Yoga therapy is a distinctively personalized approach to health and well-being through the lens of yoga. Yoga has a history of being an integrated part of the Ayurvedic medical approach for supporting all aspects of what it means to be a human being; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra’s, the eight limbs of yoga or the eight fold path offer guidelines for living a meaningful and purpose-filled life. Through advanced research and technology, we are only beginning to appreciate yoga’s many technologies and benefits.
Yoga therapy addresses the person as a whole and is based on the ancient philosophies of the Vedas, one of which is the Pancha Maya Kosha Model or the 5 koshas. According to this system, we are spiritual beings having a human experience through our five layers of being; physical, energetic, mental-emotional, wisdom, and bliss bodies.
In yoga therapy, we address all five layers according to the individuals' specific goals. The purpose of personalized yoga therapy is to reconnect the person to their wholeness on each level of their being so that true healing and transformation can occur. Whether you have something you would like to address physically, emotionally or simply on a path to more self awareness, yoga therapy offers more than stretching and breathing in a yoga class.

Meditation
Meditation is considered the 7th limb of yoga or Dyana; the uninterrupted flow of concentration. Ultimately, the purpose of the Asana (yoga poses) is to support Dyana. This being said, there are multiple ways to meditate and some that do not require what people typically perceive to be ‘yoga’. Increased focus, stress relief, improving health, becoming more responsive and less reactive, are some of the researched benefits of meditation.
With so much more attention being paid to meditation in mainstream media, there is a lot of information and misinformation about the 'right way' to meditate. Secular or non-secular, SFB offers many ways to learn meditation and it is our intention to support you on your journey to finding the style that best serves you. It is not a one size fits all. Here are examples of various meditation practices:
